Civil partnerships conversion

Same-sex couples are now able to convert their existing civil partnership to marriage, provided they registered it in England and Wales or overseas in a consulate or an armed forces base, where the civil partnership was registered according to the laws of England and Wales.

Opposite-sex couples forming a civil partnership should be aware that there is currently no provision to convert a civil partnership to a marriage at a later date.

Same-sex couples don’t need to go through a marriage ceremony to complete the conversion. Couples can, however, choose to have a non-official ceremony after the conversion.

We have created a conversion ceremony containing lots of choices to make it personal and meaningful.
